The Turtle Under the Car

It's a good thing I noticed this turtle beneath my car before backing out of the garage this morning! He/She seemed to be enjoying the somewhat cool concrete in the bit of shade. It was a dirty turtle, and I wonder if perhaps "she" was out to lay eggs or just trying to beat the heat (102 degrees F today)! I went back in the house for a few minutes before leaving, and when I returned, she was gone. Oh yes, our dog just sat by the car and never barked at the turtle...didn't even seem curious about it. Guess these are the "dog days" of summer.

Note: Abraham Lincoln of Brookville, Ohio, Daily Photo has informed me that this is a snapping turtle. Beware. Do not aim too close to this type turtle.

Well, you and your dog are lucky because that is a snapping turtle and one bite and he holds on for life. And well you loose.

I would have said, "Oh venerable one, I honor you" as I backed away and waited for him/her to move.

I thought that perhaps it might be a snapping turtle! I was farther away from it that it looks in the photo...used my trusty telephoto lens. So no wonder the dog left it alone. Perhaps the turtle had already snapped!

Hi JoAnn.
Turtles are very slow, else I wouldn't have risked this shot at all!

With a face like that no wonder he is a bit snappy - only a mother could love it!!!

Lucky for him you looked under your car - what were you actually looking for? I never look under mine - but maybe I should from now on!!!!

A wild turtle - that seems quite amazing here.

Hi Jules. I wasn't really looking for anything, although sometimes I do check for cats! I just happened to notice him/her when I unlocked the car door. The turtle was close to the driver's side of the vehicle. Glad I did, because my front tire probably would have smushed the turtle, and I would have thought it was one of our cats.
