Art by the Caboose

The City of Selma's red caboose was used as a backdrop for art at the Old Depot Museum's recent May at the Museum show and sale. You might recognize the rooster painting. The artist, Carol Henry, painted it during an acrylic painting workshop at the Performing Arts Centre. The caboose is part of the railroad exhibit behind the museum's main building.

Art Walk

This pretty fish is looking to swim her way into the hearts of art enthusiasts. She is among paintings by Candice Ward at The Frame Shoppe and will be featured in Selma's First Art Walk on Friday, August 1.

The walk is sponsored by local art galleries and frame shops. They will be open for refreshments and viewing from 4 til 8 p.m. Galleries include the Selma Art Guild, which is having a preview reception in advance of its summer juried art show.

Along with the fish, Candice has several other ocean-themed paintings on display.

The Frame Shoppe is located on Water Avenue adjacent to the St. James Hotel. The Selma Art Guild is at 508 Selma Ave.

Sanctuary

"Sanctuary" is an intriguing sculpture by Ted Whisenhunt, associate professor of art at Judson College in Marion, and it earned a blue ribbon at the March 2008 Arts Revive show in Selma.

Any idea about the background for the theme?
The "little house" has a pole inside that is topped with an upside-down, blue bottle. Why are the outside poles painted white on the bottom?

I really don't know what the artist was thinking when he designed this, but being a native of Alabama, I might have an idea!

Oh yes! Whisenhunt not only teaches art. He is lead singer and a musician with the Kudzu String Band.
