Lion King in a Swing

I had to do a double take when I walked by this lion king in a swing!
Saturday was warm and the perfect day to get out and walk and apparently to swing as well.

Narcissus is Back!

Yes, y'all! There really is a season called Spring, and it's popped up in Old Town Selma. Due to this winter's extremely lengthy grip, I was surprised to see narcissus today, the first day we've had temperatures above 70 degrees in about a month. A year ago, these forerunners of spring appeared in early January. They were a month early.

Skywatch Friday, Blue Sky

The sky couldn't be bluer in downtown Selma as a bright sun spotlights the Interpretive Center at the corner of Broad and Water. The building is under renovation and one day will anchor the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March trail. I believe part of the Pettus Bridge may be reflected in the bottom windows. You can view photos of the construction progress at the City of Selma Facebook site HERE.

January at the Bridge

January has been colder than normal, and you can see wind-whipped whitecaps in the river near the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Ice Event

We are so fortunate! I had to look hard to find any "icicles" hanging on anything this morning. Except for ice-covered vehicles and thin, patchy ice in the driveway, this is our part of the Deep South "Ice Storm." While a little ice covers the main power line to our house, we have power and cable are on schedule to watch the national championship college football game between Auburn University and Oregon tonight. Auburn, of course, is in Alabama!

Winter Day in the Park

It's winter in Selma, and here's a view of the Songs of Selma Park looking toward Water Avenue. The Alabama River is behind me.

And the Work Goes On

Some businesses along Water Avenue continue to endure the construction necessary for conversion to underground utilities.
Can't wait to photograph this area when the work is complete.

Skywatch Friday, Cloudy Bright

The sky was cloudy bright over Selma when I stopped on Broad Street to get this picture of Memorial United Methodist Church. "Cloudy Bright" conditions, especially at midday,  have always been the most difficult lighting for getting good pictures. So, I used the automatic setting.

Once Methodist, Now Lutheran

Most folks know this structure as the administration building of the former United Methodist Children's Home. Now, it's owned by Concordia College, a Lutheran university that purchased the 35-acre campus last year. Headquarters for the children's home moved to Montgomery.

Out with the Old

The new year begins with construction of the new Selma High School, which will stand in front of this 1939 structure. The school board's website states that the ornate entrance will be partially preserved and used as the entrance to the new library. Many Selmians remember SHS as the former Parrish High.

Willow Oaks Plaque

Next time you're downtown, notice the two willow oaks at the municipal complex. They were grown from acorns of the famed Gorgas Oak that once stood at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Gorgas Oak fell during a windstorm in 1982.

We are seeing an occasional robin already! Sure hope this means an early spring.

Tree Trunk Art

When a person really looks around, it's amazing what artistic designs he might find! I found these growing on a tree trunk.

January Theme Day (Best Photo of the Year)

It's City Daily Photo Blogs Theme Day, and here's my choice for Best Photo of 2010, a newborn calf who's hiding from predators while his mama stands guard in the background. This picture was posted April 27. Happy New Year!  See more Theme Day photos HERE.
