A New View of the Bridge

The demolition of a damaged building on Water Avenue made way

 for a new VIEW of the Pettus Bridge, but these VINES grew over 

the fence while VARIOUS construction and repair projects took place.

Paths through the Park

There are several paths through Riverfront Park, and they all direct you

 to the river or the amphitheatre with a beautiful view of the Pettus Bridge.

And how about those witch hazels? Their magenta blossoms 

are just luxurious all over town!

PHOTO OF THE YEAR (As the Sun Goes Down)

And the 2015 Selma, Ala., Photo Blog's PHOTO OF THE YEAR goes to

 "As the Sun Goes Down."

While there were many 50th year anniversaries in 2015 with photos

 of historic significance, choosing just one was impossible,

 and this picture shows how beautiful our bridge and river

 are any time of the year.

It was posted November 17 and taken

 during the American Legion commander's visit to town.

Here's a Behind-the-Lights view of the MERRY CHRISTMAS sign

 on the banks of the Alabama River. The sign can be seen

 from the Pettus Bridge as vehicles travel into town

 or it can be viewed from the river.

As the sun goes down, a boat cruises toward the city marina.

A jet slices the sky on its way south.

The Pettus Bridge hosts another group of walkers,

 and traffic heads home.

The Bridge Sans the Trees

After the crepe myrtles were trimmed waaaaaay back for the president's visit

 back in March, the view of the Pettus Bridge from Songs of Selma Park is all clear!

Our World, Back to Boating

Boating is back now that the weather has warmed and the river is not too high

 and not too swift. This boater took advantage of good conditions 

one evening last week as the sun was lowering in the western sky.

Walking the Bridge

People walking the bridge has become a common sight in Selma.

This photo was taken several weeks ago, long before the influx of visitors

 before the 50th year commemoration of the Selma/Montgomery

 Voting Rights Marches. Official events that include appearances 

by President Obama and his family

 and former President George W. Bush begin March 5.

 Already, related events are drawing tourists and media to town,

 and the standard media story is always a comparison of the Selma of the 1960s

 with the Selma of today. I just hope they come here with open minds

 and think of a few new angles for their articles!

 

 At least we will have spring-like temperatures for the beginning of next week!

Down the Steps

It's D Week at ABC Wednesday, and D is for DOWN the steps at Songs of Selma Park.

The lower level of the park provides a great view of the Alabama River

 and Pettus Bridge. This area will be even busier than usual

 through the next few weeks of the 50th anniversary

 of the Voting Rights marches.

New View from Bienville Park

Not very long ago, this view of the bridge was obscured by trees,

 vines and brush. But "thanks" to a sewer collapse that caused

 the bank to sink, repairs were made, and Bienville Park has a new fence

 and a new view of the Alabama River and Pettus Bridge.

Note the winter sky with wisps of white.

 It looks cold, but we enjoyed a spring-like day

 with the temp near 70 degrees F.

Foliage by the Bridge

I was pleasantly surprised to find so much greenery at the base

 of the Pettus Bridge in Songs of Selma Park! I believe the flowers

 may be four- o'clocks, but since it wasn't 4 p.m. yet,

 they weren't quite open!

Down Under

At the corner of Water and Broad, take the Songs of Selma Park steps

 down under the bridge. There is a beautiful terrace overlooking the river,

 and you will be standing beneath crepe myrtle branches,  an assortment of vines

 and even a few clumps of four-o-clocks.

River Rising

After days and days and days of rain, the Alabama River

 is rising and moving swiftly toward Mobile Bay. 

The brick fence in Bienville Park is a good overlook this time

 of year when the trees are bare.

Coming to Selma

An 18-wheeler crosses the Pettus Bridge heading into downtown Selma

 in this reflection from the river. Big trucks only use this route

 if they have business in town;  otherwise, they use the Selma Bypass.

Friday Fences, Base of the Bridge

A pretty, curved brick fence (or retaining wall) serves as a planter

 and a sign holder at the base of the Pettus Bridge.

View from the Riverwalk (Scenic Sunday)

From the wooden bridge along the riverwalk, hikers get to see the Alabama River, Edmund Pettus Bridge, Bridge Tender's Cottage, St. James Hotel, old brick warehouses and Water Avenue businesses. While much work still remains, we have a walkable trail, and the fence is going up!
