April 16 is "Save the Butterfly Day" in Alabama, and rather than post a Tiger Swallowtail, Monarch or some other natural butterfly, I found ELECTRIFLY!
Electrifly is one of the Dallas County Arts Alliance butterfly sculptures that took flight downtown last October. This butterfly was painted by artist Tammy White for patron sponsor Alabama Power Company.
Butterflies are Selma's official mascots and Alabama's official insects.
The Butterfly Calendar is here!
Selma's Spectacular Butterflies 2009 Calendar features the 12 butterfly sculptures of patron sponsors. Each represents a month. The cover and January 2010 photos also include the other three dozen butterflies.
The calendar and The Butterfly Project are sponsored by the Dallas County Arts Alliance, which was formed by more than a dozen arts organizations in Selma and Dallas County early this year.
The calendars are available for $15 each at The Frame Shoppe, which recently moved from Water Avenue to Broad Street near Butler-Truax Jewelers. Profit goes to the DCAA for future projects.

Ta Da! It was that kind of moment on Thursday when the horn blew and the first butterflies were unveiled. "Tranquility," painted by artist Nate Brown, center, sits at the foot of Lafayette Park on the bank of the Alabama River. Sponsors are Raymond and Ann Thomas, left, and Kathi and George Needham, right, and McNair and JoAnn Ramsey, not shown. More than 40 of these five-foot-tall sculptures are stationed across Selma's downtown historic district. The Butterfly Project is sponsored by the Dallas County Arts Alliance as an effort to showcase the artistic talent in Selma to begin a downtown revitalization. The entire project is locally produced. Butterfly Flight Path maps will be available this weekend at the Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival and Riverfront Market Day. Most of the butterflies can be seen via walking tours. The rest are a short driving distance away.
