T is for TRIP to Selma

Over 90 6th and 7th graders from KIPP Liberation College Prep School in Houston 

arrived at Brown Chapel AME Church on Tuesday afternoon as the first stop

 in the Southern Civil Rights tour. Joyce O'Neal and Dianne Harris,

 both student foot soldiers, shared their experiences and songs of the movement.

 The students' TRIP was delayed by the intense flooding in Houston.

A Flourishing Fence

These dainty antique roses were almost past peak by the time I checked

 on them at their Lapsley Street fence! It has been since 2010

 that I took their picture and remembered that they bloom in May.

Despite rain almost every day in April, we have yet to see any in May,

 and the heat is on.

In Memory

I love the way that mamas are memorialized in Old Live Oak Cemetery.

They were often put on pedestals, and many died young and/or lost babies

 and young children. The  ornate monuments and heartfelt inscriptions

 certainly honor their lives.

Courtyard Cafe

Thursday's Courtyard Cafe at the local library was a big hit

 with boxed lunches by Joyce's Catering and a demonstration

 of pottery techniques by Becky Blaylock of Earthquake Pottery.

 Shade was provided by crepe myrtles and big umbrellas. 

The Beginning of the Never-Ending Hay Season

First hay in May!

Yes, thanks to rain almost every day in April,

 we now have a great hay yield in May!

But this is just the beginning of what farmers who need lots of hay

 for their livestock will be doing until about October.

May Theme Day, Revolution

"Revolution" is the focus of May Theme Day at City Daily Photo Blogs,

 and the wagon wheels were turning at the 150th anniversary

 Battle of Selma Reenactment.
