Cantaloupes and Watermelon

By mid-August, most gardens are dry, and most truck farmers are finished until fall. But, I was delighted to find fresh cantaloupes and watermelons stacked in the back of this pickup truck near Memorial Stadium.

Fresh Fruit!

It was almost noon, and the heat was unmerciful when I noticed a truck full of fresh peaches, cantaloupe and watermelon parked along Broad Street. So, I stopped, got out, took a picture and purchased a cantaloupe.

Robert Strong brought these delectable summer treats down from a Birmingham market. The peaches were grown in nearby Chilton County.

Fruit of Summer

I wondered when the watermelon trucks would appear! This one was parked in the shade on Minter Avenue, and when the fruit reaches the color of the bright red truck, then it's ripe enough to eat!
