Spring Greening

Spring is really greening the grass and trees this week, just in time for this weekend's Selma Pilgrimage. Sturdivant Hall is a house museum that is on tour each year. Six private homes will also be open. Check out the SelmaPilgrimage.org website for complete information about all the venues.  

Night Before Pilgrimage (Skywatch Friday)

It's Skywatch Friday, and on the night before Pilgrimage, all was quiet at Sturdivant Hall where the sun set with a slight orange glow. The gates were locked but by 9 a.m., they will be wide open to welcome guests to the 34th annual Historic Selma Pilgrimage.

Spring Blossoms at the Parke House

This time, it is blooming at the Parke House, an 1850's Greek Revival home built by a Selma physician as a wedding present for his daughter.

Sturdivant Hall Museum

Here is a view from the sidewalk as visitors approach Sturdivant Hall. The house museum is considered one of the finest Greek Revival neoclassic antebellum mansions in the Southeast. How's that for a pedigree?!

Its architect was Thomas Helm Lee, a cousin of Robert E. Lee, and the home became a museum in the late 1950s. With numerous antiques, portraits, period furniture and formal gardens, it is a must-see for tourists. The site also includes a gift shop.
