March Theme Day, My Favorite Part of Town

It's Theme Day again, and the bloggers at City Daily Photo Blogs get to choose their favorite part of town. So now, can you believe that mine is a cemetery?

Old Live Oak Cemetery is simply magnificent in spring. The garden atmosphere amid ornate monuments and billowing Spanish Moss is both romantic and haunting. Whenever I need something new for the blog, there is always a statue , a flower or an inscription that I've never noticed before. And, while it's located next to busy Dallas Avenue, the sounds of traffic seem to fade away...right along with the etchings of weathered gravestones. 
(Spring is not this far along  here YET!  I snapped this photograph a few springs ago.)

March Theme Day (Passageway)

How many people have passed this way and trod these steps?

This early 1900's "Free Classic" Victorian home has been owned by several different families, including the Walter Ellwangers. Ellwanger arrived in Selma in 1945 with his wife and three sons. He came to minister to the African-American community and become president of the former Alabama Lutheran Academy and College (now Concordia.) During that time, the family supplemented its income by renting rooms at the top of the stairs to teachers at Albert G. Parrish High School (now Selma High.) Later, Ellwanger was asked by other local ministers to provide shelter for a young Episcopal seminarian, Jonathan Daniels. The rest of that story is included in civil rights history books.

The PEW House is among nine homes that will be on tour during Selma's 35th Historic Pilgrimage.

March Theme Day, Murals or Graffiti

Welcome to the City Daily Photo Blogs March Theme Day! Murals...Graffiti. There are several historic-type murals in Selma, but I am partial to the wall art at the Central Alabama Animal Shelter.
