G is for Gulf of Mexico

It's ABC Wednesday, and the letter of the week is G.

 So, I'm leaving Selma for the day to bring you the Gulf of Mexico 

at Gulf Shores (as it looked a week ago)! The gulf was calm, the water warm,

 and a breeze barely blew.  But today, Hurricane Isaac is riling the tides

 as it pounds New Orleans to the west.

Only 3.5 hours away, Gulf Shores is a popular vacation destination

 for many residents of Selma and Central Alabama.

February Theme Day: Animals

Today is City Daily Photo Blogs Theme Day, and we're featuring animals,

 so rather than posting an animal from Alabama's Black Belt,

here's one from Alabama's beach. Herons love to hit the beach

early in the morning and late in the afternoon, looking for fish of course!

The beach is less than four hours from Selma, an easy drive for a weekend trip!

Oil-Free!

Okay, so this isn't Selma! But The Selma, Ala., Daily Photo took time to drive a few hours to the Gulf of Mexico and check out the oil-free status for you.

All is clear, and the seagulls are happy to walk Alabama's beaches.

Meanwhile, a couple of Mississippi farmers may have the solution to cleaning up the oil spill if BP can just plug that oil well.

Morning at Orange Beach (Skywatch Friday)

This is morning at Orange Beach, Alabama where the break of waves and call of seagulls are the only sounds. There were a few hovering clouds due to Tropical Storm Eduardo way out in the western gulf, and the tides were stronger than usual, so red flags dotted the beach.
We drove less than four hours from Selma to get here, and the area has recovered beautifully from Hurricane Ivan in 2004.The hurricane plowed through the Cayman Islands before heading north through the Gulf of Mexico. It's eye came in at Perdido Beach near the Alabama-Florida state line.
Alabama's beaches are family friendly, and at our condo complex, we saw cars from Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
