How High's the Water, Mama?

 To borrow a line from Johnny Cash's song: "How high's the water, Mama?"

"58 feet and risin'!"

The high-water mark for Selma's historic 1961 flood now has an official marker at Valley Creek Park (commonly known as Bloch Park). While the park floods during times of extended heavy rain, it's still hard to believe the the Alabama River and a nearby creek overflowed to this extent!  The flood was caused by low-pressure systems from the Gulf of Mexico that brought up to 18 inches of rain over Central Alabama.

The playground at Bloch Park is empty this week, and it seems that the city, county and private schools are back in session, just when the temperatures begin to drop to the lower 90s.

The Day After

Several Selma churches jointly reenact the events of Easter weekend. On Thursday evening, they recreate The Last Supper, and on Good Friday, they hold the trial of Jesus, followed by Jesus carrying the cross to Valley Creek Park (commonly known as Bloch Park). There, the Messiah is "crucified" and his "body placed" in the tomb of Joseph of Arimethea. Joseph, a rich man, had gone to the Roman leader Pontius Pilate and requested the body.

"When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed." Matthew 27: 59-60

The next day, the priests and Pharisees convinced Pilate to place a guard at the tomb, and they sealed the stone. They remembered that Jesus said He would rise on the third day and were afraid the disciples might steal the body and claim their Messiah had risen from the dead.
(I'm not sure how anyone could claim that the Messiah had resurrected without his physical appearance, however!)

Walking the Track

Cool days tend to bring walkers to the track at Valley Creek Park. Walking and exercising more are among my priorities for this year. Since I was tagged by Chris in Nashville to share four of my New Year's resolutions, here they are: 1) Exercise more. 2) Try a bunch of new recipes. 3) Refuse to take in any more stray cats! 4) Post a new photo to this blog every day. (Not that easy to do in a relatively small town!) As for categories of sticking-to-these-resolutions, I am VERY SERIOUS.
