Ode to the Price at the Pump

Regular gasoline at $2.33 per gallon? Don't we wish!

Not too long ago, gas sold for this amount at a station near our house. Then the station closed.
Since then, the price locally has soared to almost a dollar per gallon more. Just the other day, I paid my all-time high of $3.06 per gallon. A couple hours later, my son filled up at the same station, and the price had jumped to $3.20 per gallon. I don't even want to surmise what the price will be next time the tank nears empty!

Rambling - I saw your note on my son's Chicago blog. This post almost makes me think I should drive to Alabama with a small tank truck. We're running about $2.96 here today but the price was much higher a few weeks ago.

We would get no sympathy from most of the rest of the world. Other than maybe Venezuala, where they almost give away gasoline, our prices are among the cheapest. I was in the UK with a rented car about a year ago, paying the equivalent of about $7 per US gallon. The Renault diesel sedan we had was an excellent car that got unbelievable gas mileage by our standards. Didn't see a lot of Hummers on the road, either.

It was $3.35 here today, yet the gas stations were full of SUVs. I'd ride a bike if I weren't so afraid of getting hit by one of those SUVs. The sidewalks here are few and far between, and the town is so spread out that there is little to do but drive. As for public transportation, it's something of a myth in Joplin.

Wow... I just checked with the help of a "value converter" online to see how much this is in Norwegian kroner. I couldn't believe how high your prices was until I suddenly remembered... a gallon is nearly 4 liters. We pay a little less than 2 dollars per liter. So we pay something like $7,50 per gallon.

I kind of envy you your prices.. hehe... :) Who would believe we are a "oil nation"?!

$3.19 here in Ohio where I live. It will continue to go up until people can no longer afford to drive to work and no longer afford to go shopping. At that point the government will step in and set the price of gasoline or the economy will collapse and if it happens in the next two years, George W. Bush and the Republican party will catch the blame for that too.

Sorry to say it, but Petrol that cheap would be a dream. It's about double, here in Oz.

As other commentators have noted, gasoline is much more expensive in many other countries.

What I do want to say is that I wish more people thought like Victoria and did something about reducing reliance on driving. Such a good, safe sidewalk system everywhere. I lived in the US for many years, and there were times I drove from one parking lot to another because it was just too dangerous to cross over the multilane street with no crosswalk.

Thank you for all your comments. It's interesting to discover the price of gasoline in other countries. I didn't realize we had it so "good!"
