The Cocoon

This photo is grainy, I know, but it is the best I could get of the Garden Spider in My Kitchen Window finishing a cocoon way up in the eave. She's the same spider that we "claimed" as a Halloween decoration on the window screen. Yep, she's still around, and I am about ready to get the broom and sweep her away before Thanksgiving, but she just keeps amazing us with her handiwork! She obviously picked the perfect habitat...away from the wind and the rain and right where the bugs get caught in her web.

I hope you don't sweep her away. She will perish in cold weather and her suviving eggs will hatch next year. I seldom kill spiders anymore and try to get them outside if I can. It is a nice photograph.

Well...she is gorgeous! (as spiders are concerned). They do eat pest bugs in our gardens, that is a good thing. As long as they stay outdoors. Cool shot.

Would you leave her if you found she is a helpful spider, one who eats the insects you don't want around?

Hmmmmm, guess I will keep her and her cocoons around. I can use all the pest protection I can get! But pretty soon, I'm not gonna be able to see out of my window. She's woven webs around the cocoons (more than one now) and there are buggy spots all over the outside of the pane. Not too appealing anymore! Thanks for your comments and concern!

Grainy? I didn't notice. What I did notice were the veins in the cocoon. The cocoon itself is a living thing. I have that same problem on my back windows, with spider poop (that's the only thing I can think of it being). But now that it is snowing and in the twenties and lower, all the spiders are gone. And so my windows are now clean again. I actually miss them (and I used to have a phobia before I photographed them).
