The Downtown Ginkgo Tree

The ginkgo tree by the library showed its full splendor last week.
But after last night's big freeze, those golden leaves are likely dropping.
To the left is the clock tower of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.

The Backyard, Autumn 2009

Fall doesn't get serious in Central Alabama until mid-November, but when it does, it brings spots of brilliant color just in time for Thanksgiving.

Here's my official autumn photo of the backyard for 2009. We are really pleased that the ginkgo tree has held its golden leaves for several days now. Usually, the leaves fall as soon as the color peaks.

Ginkgo 2009

Ahhh, what golden splendor!

This isn't my ginkgo tree but one captured on camera by guest photographer Christine Weerts.

Autumn in Our Backyard

I hope you aren't tired of seeing fall foliage, because I just had to post my picturesque backyard in most of its autumn glory!

As you can tell, the sugar maple is completely bare, but this ginkgo is near peak color. The ginkgo was barely six feet tall when we moved here close to 30 years ago. It's slow growing but spectacular for a few days each November. The dogwoods and redbud were planted by my husband so that we can see the beauty of spring and fall right out the big window of our den.

Happy Fall, Y'all!

Glorious Ginkgo

Though not a native species, the ginkgo tree is a glorious addition to autumn in the South, especially where pine trees grow and never change color.

Kingston's Ginkgo Tree

Hope y'all don't mind one more ginkgo tree! This one is the most beautiful that I've seen yet, and it stands majestically in front of this post-Civil War, Italianate home. So, I just had to stop and take its picture! The home, Kingston, once was owned by former Confederate Capt. Joseph F. Johnston, who later became governor of Alabama and a U.S. senator. Later, it was owned by a prominent Selma physician. This showplace was featured a few years ago on HGTV's "If Walls Could Talk." Now, HGTV will soon be returning to Selma and is actively seeking homes with interesting histories and artifacts.

Going, Going, Almost Gone

The ginkgo leaves are going, going...almost gone! Rain tonight could finish their fall.

Blue and Gold

Our ginkgo tree is near peak now and really shines against a bright blue sky.

Ginkgo Gold

It was a misty, gray day in central Alabama, but my ginkgo tree helped brighten the backyard. Leaves that have already turned yellow are starting to fall, but there are still many green ones yet to change color.
