Marble, the Decoration

Marble is one of the dogs featured on Sky Hill Animal Society's Christmas tree at the Selma Riverwalk. Numerous businesses and organizations decorated trees, and they can be seen along the walk and even from the Pettus Bridge as vehicles drive into downtown.

The Flower Shop on Broad

The bright colors and flowers at Pringle Petals sure make
a shopper want to go inside. The shop moved from across
Broad Street, and its larger location offers a
wider selection of gifts, plus flowers.

Valley Creek Presbyterian and 10th Blogaversary

Valley Creek Presbyterian Church has the distinction as the oldest
Presbyterian church in Alabama, and I chose to feature it
for this blog's 10th anniversary.

Yes, Selma, Ala., Daily Photo is 10 years old today, but that
is just a tad when compared to the long legacy of this 201-year-old church.

The congregation formed in 1816 before Alabama even became a territory.
The eight families that founded it hailed from North Carolina,
and they built a log structure in 1821. It was replaced by this
 Greek Revival building around 1857.

And yes, this church still meets! Although its active membership has dwindled
to just a few, services are still held the second and fourth Sundays
at 9:30 a.m., and they sing lovely old hymns from a 1946 hymnal.

Notice the two floors. You enter on the ground floor which serves
as a fellowship hall, then climb a couple flights of stairs
 to the second-floor sanctuary.

Above is a plaque in the foyer that was placed by the Alabama Society
of the Daughters of the American Revolution noting the church's
distinction at the oldest Presbyerian church in the state.

Many thanks to the readers and contributors of this blog!
I have met so many interesting Selmians, researched local history
and stretched my creative limits to shoot photos of the same subjects
at different angles, in different lighting and different seasons
to try to keep a small-town photo blog alive and fresh!

Thanks also to City Daily Photo Blogs which introduced me to this
project and to hundreds of cities and bloggers from around the world!

Playing in Butterfly Park

Children, adults and a dog enjoy a chilly day in  Riverfront Park one day
last week. The new playground is aptly named Butterfly Park
as  Selma is the Butterfly Capital of Alabama.

Fresh and Local

The Good Ole' Days are here again with markets buying local
so that we can eat fresh!

While we plant a few vegetables around the yard each spring,
we don't have room for great big, fresh-out-of-the-ground  greens
like these. The Orrville Farmers' Market has them though!

The Wildflower Patch

Across the fence in this downtown Selma yard are blue wildflowers
propagated into the landscape. So pretty!

Autumn Foliage and Blue Sky

The leaves, they are a'changin' in downtown Selma, and the reds and oranges
are especially accentuated by drapes of grey Spanish moss.

Against a cobalt sky and distinctive architecture, my oh my,
what a beautiful morning for a walk!

Quilted Cats

So what did I find at the World's Widest Yard Sale?

Lots...but I bought that cute, quilted cat potholder on the right.
Many sellers set up booths beneath the pine trees out at Angie's Auction
in Potter's Station. I never made it past that place!
There were so many great bargains.

This year was the second for the yard sale that extends along
and north and south of U.S. Highway 80 through central Alabama.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

How much stuff do you recycle?

Selma residents are encouraged to REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE,
and big RED, dropoff centers are located in a parking lot on Broad Street
near the National Voting Rights Interpretive Center, at the old Walmart location
on Highland Avenue and at Bloch Park/Memorial Stadium off West Dallas Avenue.

By the way, it's R Week over at ABC Wednesday!

The Pumpkins' Gate

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate;
The first one said, "My it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "It's Halloween fun."
"Wooooooo" went the wind,
And out went the lights.
These five little pumpkins ran out of sight.
Fingerplay directions:
Hold up five fingers and bend them down one at a time as the verse progresses.
Line 7: Swoosh hand through the air.
Line 8: Clap hands on "out"
Line 9: Place hands behind back.

My children learned the "Five Little Pumpkins" fingerplay verse in preschool, and these
pumpkins (way more than five!) are on display at St. Paul's Episcopal pumpkin patch.

This is My Father's World

While heading over to Papa's house for Fathers' Day, we listened to the radio broadcast
of services at Valley Grande Baptist Church. As the congregation sang
"This is My Father's World," I took the camera and snapped a picture
of "my Father's world." What a gorgeous day!

Rural Thursday, Oxford's General Store

It seems that most of the photos I post for Rural Thursday are taken in Orrville.
 Well, here's another!
This is the side of Oxford General Store. Go on in and take a look around!

Sailing

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are favorite vacation destinations for many Selmians, and I think this photo explains why!

A trip to the beach only takes three-four hours, and while there last weekend, we saw at least a half dozen other people from our hometown.
