The Pumpkins' Gate

Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate;
The first one said, "My it's getting late."
The second one said, "There are witches in the air."
The third one said, "But we don't care."
The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run."
The fifth one said, "It's Halloween fun."
"Wooooooo" went the wind,
And out went the lights.
These five little pumpkins ran out of sight.

Fingerplay directions:
Hold up five fingers and bend them down one at a time as the verse progresses.
Line 7: Swoosh hand through the air.
Line 8: Clap hands on "out"
Line 9: Place hands behind back.

My children learned the "Five Little Pumpkins" fingerplay verse in preschool, and these 

pumpkins (way more than five!) are on display at St. Paul's Episcopal pumpkin patch.

Skywatch Friday, Bright and Spooky!

So who is brave enough to open this gate and find his way to the treats that will be waiting amid spooky Spanish Moss, spiders and cobwebs? Well, it doesn't look so frightful with an azure sky overhead, but come Saturday night, you better watch out for things that go bump in the night!

Monsters in the Library

Just before Halloween every year, witches, ghosts and ghouls take up residence in the library!

They peer from every nook and cranny, even stationing themselves on the checkout desk in the children's wing.

Since I haven't been to the library recently, I reached back into last year's picture file and found a "Happy Halloween" photo for you.

Dinner with Jeffrey

The table in the window of Butler-Truax Jewelers is set for dinner with the "spirits" of Selma. Guests include Jeffrey, the ghost that resides at the home of Kathryn Tucker Windham, noted storyteller and author.

The Web

Here's the Web, Selma style...not the World Wide Web, but a bunch of spider webs across the porch and bushes (click to enlarge photo) and a web of Spanish Moss across the entire fence.

What fun it must have been for trick or treaters to have opened the gate of this fence and made their way to the porch for candy!

Happy Halloween

Over at the Birmingham Daily Photo, Virginia has begun an unofficial "100 Strangers Challenge." She challenges herself to greet strangers, get to know them a bit and ask to take their picture. She's met some interesting people that way! So, I decided to try the same thing, and today I met this curious fellow at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library. He was too timid to say a word, but his picture tells his story...which is? I don't know, except he normally wears a suit of armor, and now he is dressed as a warlock? I really think that bright orange (scarf?) brightens him up a lot, and I picked up a vibe that he'd like to tell everybody "Happy Halloween!"

Friendly Ghosts

Friendly ghosts hang on the front doors of Ashford, a 1903 Victorian home in Old Town.

On Halloween, I bet little ones will enjoy their trip up the steps to meet these ghosts for treats.
