Sure wish I had a place to put some of these pretty green dishes!

These vintage cups, saucers, vases and stemware are arranged so nicely at Junebugg's,

 an indoor flea and antique market that is in the former Food World building.

Selma Interpretive Center

The Selma Interpretive Center opened a year ago, and it is sure to attract 

many visitors this weekend for the annual Bridge Crossing Jubilee.

 Operated by the National Park Service, the center occupies

 a former bank building on the corner of Broad Street and Water Avenue.

Water Avenue Grillwork

The Adler building on Water Avenue recently underwent repairs,

 and the second-story grillwork remains and sure lends itself to photography. 

In the Village

This black cat soaked the sunshine and enjoyed racing 

across the grass in Heritage Village recently.

Bring on the pine straw!

It's time to mulch the gardens at Sturdivant Hall.

The Fence at the Mabry-Jones House

The fence that surrounds the Mabry-Jones House is one of the simplest,

 yet most unique in town, and you are invited to step inside the fence

 on Friday, March 16 for an evening reception and tour of this 1850 mansion.

 Once the home of Capt. Catesby ap Roger Jones (who commanded the Merrimac

 against the Monitor) in a Civil War battle of the ironclads, this Greek Revival

 still remains in the family and is filled with intriguing collections.

 Even more intriguing are the circumstances of Capt. Jones' death.

The Old Road to Selma

Before there was a County Road 37, there was the old road that led to Selma

 from Summerfield, and Main Street was part of it. Back in 1865 at this intersection,

 Federal cavalry rode right by the antebellum house on the left.

 Many homes in the area were looted, burned or used to house troops.

F is for Fleur De Lis

I've been looking forward to "F" Week at ABC Wednesday

 so that my feature could be the fleur de lis! 

Selma has lots of these "flower of the lily" designs

 that were used by both French and English monarchs on shields and coats of arms.

 The fleur de lis is especially popular on old ironwork around town.

Broad Street

It's been a while since I posted a photo of downtown Selma.

 Here's the main road, Broad Street, otherwise known as U.S. Highway 80.

 Some of the stores pictured are Butler Truax Jewelers (in the old Kress building),

 the Truax & Co. gift shop, Shoe Palace, Carter Drug and Sneakers.

 In the distance is the First Presbyterian Church clock tower. 

Go straight, and Highway 80 will take you to Demopolis.

 Turn around, and you'll cross the Pettus Bridge and head to Montgomery.

Siegel's Servants Quarters

Most of the little houses like this one have long ago been torn down,

 but the Siegel's Servants Quarters has a home in Heritage Village.

 Built around 1900, the building is on the Historic Register.

 Historic Village is the project of the

 Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society. 

Several small, historic structures were moved to this site. 

The village is annually featured on the Selma Pilgrimage,

 and this year will feature demonstrations of early crafts such as 

basket weaving, pottery, quilting and soap making.

 (I hear that there may be a few chickens and goats too!) 

Side Shadows

Branches from the tall shade trees at the Ben Ellis Dunaway House

 in Orrville dance across the side of this antebellum structure

 that once was a boys' academy. 

The home is one of several that will be on tour

 at this year's Historic Selma Pilgrimage March 16-17.

Sidewalk Flower Show

This fence belongs to a garden and landscape professional

who doesn't just plant inside the fence!

 There's a a flower show along his sidewalk every season of the year.

Ye Olde Gasoline Pump

Oh to find six gallons of gasoline for slightly more than $1!

I wonder just how old this pump is! Notice that the fuel contains the dreaded lead!

Anyway, it makes some great vintage yard art

 and stands along a street in rural Dallas County.

Another round of ABC Wednesday is here, and the letter is "E."

 So, how about an EARLY spring! The vine with the pretty yellow blooms

 is more EVIDENCE that despite a calendar that still

 says it's February, spring isn't going away!

and I'm told that it once was a doctor's office.   

Rummaging

Whisky Frisky is rummaging for acorns next to an oak tree on Lapsley Street.

Those pretty pansies caught my eye before I noticed the squirrel.
