Marble, the Decoration

Marble is one of the dogs featured on Sky Hill Animal Society's Christmas tree at the Selma Riverwalk. Numerous businesses and organizations decorated trees, and they can be seen along the walk and even from the Pettus Bridge as vehicles drive into downtown.

The Flower Shop on Broad

The bright colors and flowers at Pringle Petals sure make
a shopper want to go inside. The shop moved from across
Broad Street, and its larger location offers a
wider selection of gifts, plus flowers.

Playing in Butterfly Park

Children, adults and a dog enjoy a chilly day in  Riverfront Park one day
last week. The new playground is aptly named Butterfly Park
as  Selma is the Butterfly Capital of Alabama.

The Wildflower Patch

Across the fence in this downtown Selma yard are blue wildflowers
propagated into the landscape. So pretty!

Autumn Foliage and Blue Sky

The leaves, they are a'changin' in downtown Selma, and the reds and oranges
are especially accentuated by drapes of grey Spanish moss.

Against a cobalt sky and distinctive architecture, my oh my,
what a beautiful morning for a walk!

Red and Green

Downtown Selma is filled with red and green both with real flowers (foreground) and artificial Christmas wreaths with red bows. It's a festive sight, even on a cloudy day!

Fabulous Shades

Even young children like Oldies music! The Fabulous Shades were among several music groups featured at Saturday's Riverfront Market Day in downtown Selma. The weather was perfect for the event: blue skies, low humidity, high around 80. Look for more Market Day pictures this week.

Downtown Selma

It's May in Selma, Alabama, and here is part of downtown during early afternoon. This view on Broad Street looks toward the Edmund Pettus Bridge and Alabama River from the corner of the Selma-Dallas County Public Library.
In the middle center (tallest building just behind the Rexall sign) is the former Teppers Department Store, which was recently purchased by the Freedom Foundation and is being renovated for civic use. The old metal facade has been removed, exposing the original architecture. At the extreme lower right is the El Ranchero Mexican restaurant featured in the May 1 Theme Day.

Selma City Hall

I'm celebrating the one-month anniversary of Selma, Ala. Daily Photo Blog with a picture of City Hall. The modern building offers a bit of Old South flavor with its wrought-iron trim. The municipal complex was built on the site of the old Hotel Albert (view photo here), which was modeled after the Doges Palace in Venice, Italy. The hotel was demolished in the 1960s when funds could not be raised to save it. Since then, Selmians vowed to save their valuable historic structures if at all possible. Looking up the street on this very glary day, is downtown Selma with the Pettus Bridge in the extreme background.
