Playing in Butterfly Park

Children, adults and a dog enjoy a chilly day in  Riverfront Park one day
last week. The new playground is aptly named Butterfly Park
as  Selma is the Butterfly Capital of Alabama.

Waiting to Play

Riverfront Park has a new playground, but it wasn't quite ready
to open when I took my grandson there a couple weeks ago.
Next time he's in Selma, I promised we will go!

Skateboarding along the Riverwalk

The riverwalk was quiet a few days ago except for a young twosome
trying out their skateboards. If you look closely in the upper right corner
of the photo, the railroad trestle across the river is visible behind the trees.

Concert at the Amphitheatre

Selma's long-awaited Riverfront Park Amphitheatre is here!

It opened Labor Day weekend, then served as the venue for a Saturday night
concert in celebration of Morgan Academy's 50th anniversary.
Renovated from an old warehouse, it is a beautiful addition
 to the downtown riverfront.

Our World, Amphitheater

The amphitheater at Riverfront Park is almost finished!

The former warehouse anchors one side of the park that will include
pavilions and playgrounds in the future.
This photo is the view as seen from the Pettus Bridge.

August Theme Day, Street Lamps

It's August Theme Day over at City Daily Photo, and we are posting images
of street lamps around the world. Here's one of Selma's newest, a street lamp
along the recently completed riverwalk. As you can tell, this was another cloudy day,
but it made for a more dramatic view of the railroad trestle and river.

Up with the Roof

The amphitheatre is shaping up!

Roofs are in place with construction of the stage section under way.
Soon it will look a lot more like the architectural drawing.

Police Presence

Selma Police recently beefed up their downtown presence with a new substation
at 2 Lawrence St. The station gives Water Avenue and Riverfront Park
 the benefit of increased safety.

Gateways

Walk through this ornate, iron gate at Grumbles Alley, and you will find steps that lead
down to the riverwalk. In the background is the Edmund Pettus Bridge.

Summer in the Park

It's the middle of summer in Riverfront Park; the sky is blue, and we're wearing humidity
like a jacket. But just across the bridge, around  the bend and up some steps
are restaurants with cool air and iced tea!

New paths are available for walking and biking in Riverfront Park.
Now, if the heat will just let everybody get outdoors!

Riverfront Park Master Plan

Selma has broken ground for a riverfront park. Kudzu, trees, bushes and weeds have been cleared along the Alabama River so that the first phase can begin. To see a better view of the plans, check out the City of Selma website HERE.

A river walk will be among the first sections built. Later, plans call for an amphitheatre, floating boat dock, interactive fountain, playground, carousel, concessions, aquarium and pavilion. Check out the flyer HERE.
