The Learning Tree

Here is Byrd Elementary School's Learning Tree. A marker placed by the Alabama Forestry Commission states that the live oak once shaded Judge William Byrd's home, and the judge "championed the rights of students to a good education." The school was established in 1916 and is still educating children in Selma.

That oak tree is magnificent. It took a while to grow that big and had no McDonald's next door to snack on but depended on what it could get from the spot somebody stuck it.

If you think of trees like they are it is even more remarkable that we have them to shade us at all.

What a beautiful tree with a great history. My boys just moved into their new school after Christmas break. The school they were at was nearly 100 years old. I for one, was sad to see them move. I think of all the history in that old school and hate that it's sitting there so quiet now. The school district is still deciding what to use it for. I hope they keep it and it doesn't get torn down.
