Two scents compete for the nose in early May: mild, sweet honeysuckle and strong, sinus-killing privet. Here's the honeysuckle, the only one I dare get close enough to for a photo. It's the vine you can eat, or at least pull the bloom apart to get the nectar. Anybody else ever do that as a child? Now, I understand that cats like honeysuckle, because an ingredient in its wood is used in catnip!

What kid hasn't pulled honeysuckle apart for that little drop of nectar! (I suppose there are a lot of city kids that hasn't in all reality.) OH, and I love the smell of honeysuckle--it takes me back instantly to my childhood and sitting on the porch at the end of the day.
I knew I smelled honeysuckle the other night while driving around then last night I noticed it in full bloom out in the yard! I love honeysuckle! I remember my grandpa showing me how to get the nectar out, which I've passed on to my kids!
Strange how things can jar your memory. I remember doing that as a kid, but havent thought of it since I was small.
Who doesn't love a good little sip of honeysuckle nectar!
Never had honeysuckle but reading your words and all comments I guess it tastes good!
I've got honeysuckle in my garden, but it will be a while before the flowers come out. Such a pretty plant.
Hi,
Nice photo
Loved it when I was a kid! Thanks for the memories. I love the picture.
Thanks for visiting and commenting on Mostly Rusty.
I remember trying it once as a kid. Pretty picture, our flowers and plants are just starting to bloom.
this makes me sad -- where we use to live, there was some growing behind my house. I loved so much sitting outside at night to smell it.
I Love the smell of honeysuckle.
