 during the Central Alabama Fair, and I'm sure

 the horses and ponies didn't mind a bit!

Ribbons, Ribbons

There were plenty of ribbons to go around at the Central Alabama Fair last week,

 most to the folks who still preserve their own food!

Freezing and canning food is what we did in the summer back when I was growing up

...in a hot kitchen with a big window fan

...made even hotter by canners on the stove.

 Gosh, I haven't made any of my grandmama's pear pickle in years!

 I really, really need to get back into this, what with food prices going up.  

Do you preserve food, and I have to wonder if our daughters and granddaughters

 (and sons and grandsons!) are learning how!

Let's talk to the animals at the Central Alabama Fair Petting Zoo!

 There are rabbits, baby chicks, pigs, a cow, horses and goats.

The Lions' Club sponsored event continues through Saturday 

at the old armory and fairgrounds on West Dallas Avenue.

Cozy Dawg Customer

Wednesday was Kids' Day at the Central Alabama Fair, and this little girl is tasting what is probably her very first Cozy Dawg.

Cozy Dawgs (a special-recipe corndog) are sold by the Selma Civitan Club every year at the fair. 

Music at the Fair

Music by The Grasshopper Stringband added a bit of bluegrass to the Central Alabama Fair Monday night. The new group is already making a name for itself in the Black Belt region and is also scheduled to play at the Kenan's Mill Festival in November.

The Neverland Ferris Wheel

For Michael Jackson fans, the Neverland ferris wheel is the most thrilling ride at the fair!

Archway Amusements purchased the ride from the Neverland Ranch in September 2008, and it has been touring the towns ever since.

It's said that Chair 13 was the late pop icon's favorite; hence, it's also the favorite of many riders of the Midway.

Soil Tunnel

While critters crawl and dogs dig above the ground, I wonder what goes on under ground!

You can find out at the Central Alabama Fair simply by crawling through this soil tunnel. The tunnel is part of an exhibit sponsored by the Dallas County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Round and Round

Round and round they go!

The Central Alabama Fair Midway rides opened Monday night and will twirl at Lion's Fair Park on Dallas Avenue through Saturday.

Although I wasn't there, my photo files from at least 15 years ago produced today's post. The two little blonds in the back are mine.

Fair Petting Zoo

The Central Alabama Fair opens its gates tonight in Selma, and among its most popular attractions is the petting zoo.

Here's hoping that the rain goes away, but if you are going, the petting zoo and is covered and dry!

Fall Festivals

I just reached back into my October 2008 photo file and grabbed this autumn wreath! Fall is officially here, and that means events, events, events for Selma.

The Central Alabama Fair is October 5-10, followed by the Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival October 9 and 10, and Riverfront Market Day October 10. Whew!

On October 11, photographs by Selma author and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham will be featured in a special showing at the Selma Art Guild. The reception is 2-4 p..m.

Then, on October 17, there's the African Extravaganza, and Haunted History Tours are October 16 and 17.

October offers bright blue weather for our area, so come along and join the fun!

Opening Night

It's opening night for the Lions' Club Central Alabama Fair!
The fairgrounds open shortly after 5 p.m. at the old armory on Dallas Avenue. There will be the usual midway rides, popcorn and cotton candy, and don't forget to eat the ever popular Kozy Dawgs. You know that your name will be called until you head over to the Civitan booth!
My favorite part of the fair is the exhibits. Local talent really shines through the art, photography, canning, cakes, cookies and crafts.
For entertainment, tonight the Back in Time music group from the Talladega School for the Blind will perform at the pavilion at 6:30 p.m.

Colorful Quilts - 200th Post

These colorful quilts were on display at the Central Alabama Fair last week, and I see that some of them won ribbons. I am fortunate to have several handmade quilts of my own, made by quilters on both sides of our family.
I just noticed that this is Selma, Ala., Daily Photo's 200th post, so what better way to celebrate the occasion than with handcrafted heirlooms from quilters in the area!

Midway Madness

The ears are perked, but the eyes convey aggravation. This farm friend at the petting zoo had a sideline view of the Midway at the Central Alabama Fair last week. I don't think it was appreciated!

Sewing up Ribbons

Some folks are who nimble with a needle and thimble won ribbons for their embroidery at the Central Alabama Fair. These pieces remind me of pillowcases and guest towels that my grandmother decorated with her handiwork.

Fair photography winners

Here are a couple of pictures in the animal division of the Central Alabama Fair's photography competition. Looks like this little calf photo got a blue ribbon!

Moo at the Zoo

"Pet me! Pet me!" is what this cute calf seems to be thinking at the Central Alabama Fair Petting Zoo. Farmers from Plantersville to Orrville brought animals for this favorite fair exhibit. In addition to this calf were rabbits, chickens, pigs, sheep, goats, a horse and a donkey. The event continues at Lions Fair Park in Selma through Saturday.
