Stories for the Children

Lyn Ford weaves a few of her "home-fried" and Affrilachian tales for students 

at Cedar Park Elementary School in Selma. She spent three days this week

 sharing stories with area school children as part of the

 Kathryn Tucker Windham Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival. A teaching 

artist with the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, Lyn has won several 

storytelling awards and will tell more tales at the festival this weekend.

Telling Tales

If you love stories, music and lots of fun, the 36th annual

 Kathryn Tucker Windham Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival is this weekend. 

Last year, Donald Davis was a featured storyteller, and this year,

 three nationally known storytellers plus The Dill Pickers musical group will perform.

Fall Festivals

I just reached back into my October 2008 photo file and grabbed this autumn wreath! Fall is officially here, and that means events, events, events for Selma.

The Central Alabama Fair is October 5-10, followed by the Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival October 9 and 10, and Riverfront Market Day October 10. Whew!

On October 11, photographs by Selma author and storyteller Kathryn Tucker Windham will be featured in a special showing at the Selma Art Guild. The reception is 2-4 p..m.

Then, on October 17, there's the African Extravaganza, and Haunted History Tours are October 16 and 17.

October offers bright blue weather for our area, so come along and join the fun!

"From Sea to Shining Sea"

"From Sea to Shining Sea" was painted by local artist Kathleen Wright.

So what is it, you ask?
It's a "sneak peek" at the butterfly sponsored by Laser Made Creations' and is one of 46 butterfly sculptures that will be unveiled in downtown Selma October 9. Each segment on the wings represents an American scene from the Atlantic to the Pacific oceans.

The artist is also painting Venetian murals in her Queen Anne house in north Dallas County and finishing up portraits for Roseanne Cash (Johnny's daughter). She recently started her own blog as well...called Southern Artistic Touch.

Kathleen grew up in Florida in an Italian family with an Italian restaurant, so that 'splains her love of Venice and Italy!
Hmmmmm...seems Italian style runs in our county! The butterfly sculpture craftsman, Nico Giampietro, is an Italian native.

If you can make it to the butterfly unveilings, come on! It's at 5 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9 at Lafayette Park right next to the St. James Hotel on Water Avenue. Then, you might as well stay until Friday night when the Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival begins, and be sure not to miss Riverfront Market Day on Saturday! (PSSST! The Central Alabama Fair is going on that week as well!)
