Temps were in the 80s a few days ago when this picture of summer hanging baskets

 was taken. But despite almost record-breaking cold this morning, it really IS time

 to hang some flowers! The flowing, pink bouganvillea sure is tempting me!

Summer Still Blooms

It's officially Fall, but summer still blooms. Our first frost should be weeks away!

Last Blooms of Summer

Enjoy the flowers while you may, because the last blooms of summer are hanging on in the still 90-plus degree heat. Soon, we will plant pansies and mums for autumn color. Thanks to Christine Weerts for the photo!

A Burst of Color

I love the burst of color as the face of this flower changes from pale peach to magenta to sunshine yellow. I found it in the yard of Carol Henry, one of our local master gardeners.

The Blue-Violet Vitex Tree

Local Master Gardener Carol Henry kindly allowed me to traipse through her garden this morning, and when I first saw these long, finger-like blossoms, I thought this was a butterfly bush. But, it's a small Vitex (or Chaste) tree.

The Chaste berries have quite a history as a folk remedy for treating a variety of medical conditions, including regulation of hormones in women.

The Beetle and the Butterfly

I believe the zinnias in my front yard are on their last legs (er, stems). Critters such as the beetle, underneath, are taking over, while butterflies and moths, above, are scarce this summer.

Summer on Church Street

Here's a summertime view of one of my favorite houses and yards on Church Street. Wish I could keep my own yard this neat and colorful!

Flowers and the Flag

It's midsummer, but the flowers in this yard are still beautiful, and believe me, it takes a lot of work (watering and weeding in heat and humidity) to keep gardens looking healthy around here.

I like the way the American flag is displayed in the center of one of the flower beds.

Selma City Hall in Summer

Crape myrtles and magnolias frame the facade of Selma City Hall, and across the street these pretty pinks practically glow in the late evening sun.

Click the photo to enlarge, and you can see the municipal fountain on the far right. Just to the left of it is the Civil War Era Brooke Cannon. (Note that it's pointing north!)

Friday Evening Downtown

Here's a view of downtown from in front of City Hall on a Friday evening. Click on the picture for a larger view, and you can see the Rexall sign on the right and the sunlit Pettus Bridge in the background.

Sunning

I was out taking butterfly sculpture pictures when these colorful flowers drew my attention. Then, I noticed the curled-up cat on the steps. Kitty was sleeping so soundly in the morning sun that she never knew I was there.

Cosmic Cosmos (Skywatch Friday)

The eastern sun rises from behind oaks and pines to capture the colors of cosmos, a flower that just loves heat but is holding up well in 50-degree Fahrenheit mornings.

This is Skywatch Friday. What a pretty day to wake up and face the sun!

Zinnia

It's late summer. It's hot. It's humid, and the giant zinnias love it!

In the Pink

When in Selma in July, the heat and humidity are a lot more tolerable when the on and off rain showers produce lovely pink lilies such as this.
