The Church Street Methodist Tour

A circuit riding preacher (Roger Butler), left, helped tell the history of Church Street United Methodist Church during Pilgrimage Weekend. At right, Robert Gamble, architectural historian with the Alabama Historical Commission, came to Selma for the tours and enjoys talking with members of the church. The church was founded 175 years ago and will host its anniversary celebration in April. Built in the early 1900s, the current sanctuary is its third.

That is really amazing that the church is 175 years old. Are those stained glass windows in the background? Hard to tell. Anyway, they are very nice.

bfarr, Guess I should have said the church was founded 175 years ago! This is the third building and was built in the early 1900s.

I like the top hat! I can just see him riding down a dusty lane on his way to visit some little country church to give a sermon, engage in some chit-chat, and then go on his way again to another little country church...etc., etc.

The methods used by Methodists were quite methodical!
