Step right up (at your own risk!) and discover your weight! Some of us don't mind weighing ourselves on a sidewalk right in front of everybody. But others....well! These old scales are located just outside Swift Drug Store downtown. Even though they are rusty, I think they lend a certain antique Americana to Broad Street, right along with the brick sidewalk and awnings.
Also notice the RED newspaper boxes, and far up the sidewalk the RED motorcycle. I almost posted this photo for Red Theme Day yesterday.

Does it still cost a penny to get weighed?? :-)
I like the idea of scales. I would prefer a scale that has a mirror. You just stand in front of it and it automatically guesses your weight and displays it so all passersby can see it and smile.

Hi Ming, No, it didn't cost me anything to weigh!
Now Abraham, a mirror on those scales would be considered cruel and unusual harassment, no? (: Only the weighee gets to see the weight, unless somebody steps up and looks over his shoulder.
Thanks for stopping by.
Bravo for your blog. I know Alabama through novels and films only (I've been to a lot of places in the USA) but your photos makes me feel the "mood" of your
city and your state.
Thank you for the comment on my blog.
Hi I found your blog by Ab Lincoln, interestig photo (weightscale)and your writing,
That reminds me of a holiday/visit in Spain last year.... everywhere weightscales, so strange! I would rather weight myself in the bathroom, not on the streets.
Feel free to visit my blog.

I love old things like this that still work. Makes you appreciate how simple and undressed up something can be, and yet still be serviceable.
With electronic balances like that
no problem of weight
Nice picture, interesting post!
Congratulations for your 100th!
Here we had some machine like that and I remember it gave a horoscope too. LoL :-)
Upstairs Dr James Chisholm had his office--1925 on till ????
ON the next corner is Woolworths (1930's 40's,)
Further down Myer Shoe Co had a free X-Ray machine to see how well your shoes fit. Now considered dangerous to your health
we have flashy weighing scales at almost all the local railway station in mumbai.. costs one rupee and the weight card that is spewed out with a lot of fanfare also gives you your fortune for the day!
Wonderful photograph of the scale.
Thanks for visiting my North Bay Blog! Have a Happy July 4th!
Just beautiful photo!
wow these I used to see in our local drugstore when I was little....and many other places too. Back then a lot of places had them....and I think it cost 25 cents to get yourself weighed..
