Community Garden

Fresh tomatoes, squash and peppers plus will soon be ready for the Old Town neighbors who planted and worked this community garden. They planted the garden on a vacant lot, and recent heavy rains are keeping it growing.

Community gardens not only reduce household food budgets and provide healthy vegetables, they beautify neighborhoods, encourage social interaction, recreation and exercise.

Thanks to Old town guest photographer Christine Weerts the picture.

Summer on Church Street

Here's a summertime view of one of my favorite houses and yards on Church Street. Wish I could keep my own yard this neat and colorful!

Dogwoods in Old Town

Ah, Spring!

Walk or ride through Old Town, and take in clouds of dogwood blossoms to recover from last weekend's soaking rains!

The weather folks are forecasting perfect weather for the Selma Pilgrimage this weekend...with highs in the low 70s and plenty of sunshine.

I have posted a new blog focusing just on Selma events since I seem to feature so many of them here, and of course, the Pilgrimage this weekend is the first post. Check it out at Selma Now.

Old Town Belfry

This cute belfry sits atop...a school? a church? a barn?

Noooo...a storage shed!

The owner says she found the bell, then decided it would look nice in its own little tower.

Sunning

I was out taking butterfly sculpture pictures when these colorful flowers drew my attention. Then, I noticed the curled-up cat on the steps. Kitty was sleeping so soundly in the morning sun that she never knew I was there.

Respite

The rocking chairs on this Old Town neighborhood porch look like a pretty good place to rest...away from television and all the election hype...and into enjoying the cooler temperatures of early autumn.

Thanksgiving First!

Christmas may already be in the stores, but it isn't in the air or on the doors...yet! I found this "berry delightful" autumn wreath on a door in Selma's Old Town neighborhood. Our town does itself proud during Thanksgiving. There will be a community-wide Thanksgiving service Sunday night at First Presbyterian Church, and while Christmas decorations are up downtown, the lights won't be turned on til after next Thursday.
