Sharing the Highway

When driving U.S. Highway 80 both east and west of Selma, be prepared
to share the road not only with big trucks but with big tractors.
Farmers are busy, especially at this time of year!

Highway Through the Black Belt

From this side of the barbed-wire fence and behind the tall roadside grass,
you can see the traffic along U.S. Highway 80 through Alabama's Black Belt
in west Dallas County. This four-lane road is MUCH less traveled
and a lot easier to drive than an interstate.

Road Through the Black Belt

Heading west from Selma, U.S. Highway 80 is a mostly four-lane road
that traverses Alabama's Black Belt region. The area is named for the color
of much of its soil, heavy clays suitable for pastures, ponds and clover,
although it once grew a lot of cotton.

Working on Labor Day

Today is Labor Day in the USA, and many people had the day off from work. But, State Troopers and police worked full force to keep the highways safe for what is traditionally a big travel day. Here, officers are working along U.S. Highway 80 between Selma and Demopolis.

Skywatch Friday, Dreary Day

Much of this week has been dreary with cloudy skies and off-and-on rain. Good thing the grass is green to make the drive from Selma to Montgomery picturesque! These hills are in a section of Lowndes County along the historic route of U.S. Highway 80.

We Can Fly! (Skywatch Friday)

Sometimes photography enthusiasts just get lucky!

I was lucky the day I captured this copter whirring right above the windshield of our truck along U.S. Highway 80 west of Selma. The deep blue sky, just a bit saturated, seems to accentuate the glory of flying . It was a beautiful day, and the camera even caught the reflection of the highway right of way.

Happy Skywatch out there. Catch more skies at www.skyley.blogspot.com.

Highway 80 East

U.S. Highway 80 East from Selma to Montgomery offers beautiful views of the countryside. The historic route through Lowndes County is generally not crowded, and travelers can take side trips to river campgrounds and parks.

Labor Day Rain

An 18-wheeler passes our vehicle as we head into rain clouds on our short Labor Day trip for a family meal. This is U.S. Highway 80 west of Selma. Notice how green the grass is now. It was brown for most of the summer.

Drought Along U.S. Highway 80

Though there were rain clouds ahead, this photo of U.S. Highway 80 west of Selma is a good representation of the current severe drought. Patches of green appear here and there, but notice the fields on both sides of the road. They are yellow/brown when they should be green. This picture was taken Sunday through the windshield of our truck just east of Marion Junction.
