Last Hurrah

It's a last hurrah of summer for many of our butterflies although 

they will be around a bit longer.  This Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

 (our state's official butterfly) feasts upon lantana,

 but soon there will be yellow butterflies

 flitting among spider lilies.

Selma is the Butterfly Capital of Alabama, and the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

 is its mascot.This one just lit on the prolific lantana that seems

 to grow about as fast as kudzu!

Society's Queen City Swallowtail

Selma is the "Butterfly Capital of Alabama," and the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is its official mascot. This butterfly sculpture was sponsored by the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society and painted by member Candi Duncan. It sits on the corner of Heritage Village near Sturdivant Hall.

The Butterfly Project unveiled 45 sculptures Thursday just in time for festival visitors to include the tour in their weekend. The Alabama Tale-Tellin' Festival continues tonight at Pickard Auditorium at 7 p.m., and Riverfront Market Day on Water Avenue is open until 5 p.m.

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Camera Critters)

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterflies are loving our zinnias this summer. The butterflies are either black and blue or yellow and black. The yellow version is Selma's official butterfly.

The Butterfly Capital

April 16 is Save the Butterfly Day, and Selma is the Butterfly Capital of Alabama. This sign in the Mallieve Breeding Butterfly Garden at the School of Discovery depicts the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Selma's official mascot. The butterfly also occupies a prominent position upon our city seal.
