In Memory of Hometown Defenders

This little-known Confederate monument on Marie Foster (formerly Rangeline Road) honors three Selmians who died in 1865 while defending their town from Union Gen. J.H. Wilson's invasion. The monument is near the Trinity Lutheran Church and was erected in 1907 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Thanks for Christine Weerts for the photo.

After I purchased the Philpot house (built in 1852)at the corner of Alabama Ave and Union Street in 2007, I have been searching for information on the Philpot family. I had sought out this monument after finding it referenced in a old file at the library.
