Gees Bend Ferry

We're leaving Selma and Dallas County today for a 30-mile side trip to the Wilcox County hamlet of Gees Bend, home of the renowned Quilters of Gees Bend.

The former tenant community is located in a isolated bend of the Alabama River, and the ferry saves hours of travel by road to Camden, the county seat.

To read more about Gees Bend and the ferry, check HERE.

Thanks to guest photographer Christine Weerts for the photo!

O I do love ferry rides.

I love taking ferries to islands! It reminds me of our annual "pilgrimage" to Door County, Wisconsin and Washington Island up there!

I haven't ridden a ferry in years!

Thanks, but I didn't go. Christine Weerts went here and sent me the photo. Maybe I will make it to Gees Bend and the ferry some day!

I have a friend who owns several blankets from Gee's Bend. There is quite a story behind their quilts. I do hope that you met some of the quilters and have stories to tell us about your trip!

Kate, that is so interesting! Did your friend buy the quilts at Gees Bend or through a market? While I did not make this trip to Gees Bend, I have met some of the quilters when they have had demonstrations in Selma.
