Fruit of Summer

I wondered when the watermelon trucks would appear! This one was parked in the shade on Minter Avenue, and when the fruit reaches the color of the bright red truck, then it's ripe enough to eat!

Whenever I see big water melons like these, it always takes me back to a few visits to the Greek isles Ios. We used to cut out the meat and fill the melon with vodka and orange juice, and then leave it in the fridge for a few hours before hitting the beach, those were the days!

Steffe has the right idea; however, eating just the red meat is delicious, too. Should I reveal my "criminal" past" Well, here goes. As a teen-ager, my friends and I figured out how to get wonderful watermelons out of a stationery boxcar, waiting to be unloaded. Too scared to try it regularly, my criminal career ended early, but how delicious while it lasted!!

Yummy! Very nice. One summer, when I was in my teens, I worked at a farm in California...we picked watermelons in 90-100 degree heat...so the owner let us break open a ripe one every once in awhile and we would eat just the heart...an incredible experience, not since duplicated!

Hard work, though...some of those melons weighed 30 pounds or more!

I love a tasty watermelon in the summer. I remember when we were kids and my sister and brother and I would compete to see who could spit the seeds the farthest!

Nice colorful picture. Takes me back to summers in LA and eating water melon on the porch.
