Pink Blitz

Selma showed off its annual pink blitz the past couple of weeks

 as azaleas peaked here, there and everywhere!

 Had it not been for storm after storm after storm,

 I do believe the town would still be pink! These azaleas bloom

 on the  Presbyterian corner that is just across the street 

from the Baptist corner. First Baptist is seen in the background.

Skywatch Friday, Spring has Sprung

Spring in Selma is simply breathtaking when the skies are bright blue,

 the azaleas are peaking, and there has been rain to wash away the pollen!

The azaleas are peaking this week, and Selma is almost at its spring garden best!

Byrd School

The grounds of historic Byrd Elementary School are beautiful in spring. Located in Old Town, the main building is 92 years old and has undergone several renovations.

A sport court was added last December, and the school has an active arts program. 

Old Live Oak in April

We visited New Live Oak Cemetery yesterday; now we're back to Old Live Oak.

This cemetery is the resting place of many famous Selmians including U.S. Vice President William Rufus King.

His body was moved from his plantation across the river to this mausoleum.

King had gone to Havana, Cuba for his health at the time of his inauguration in 1853 and took his oath there.

Less than a month later, he died. King is also known as Selma's founder, and he served as a U.S. senator.

A Walk Through New Live Oak

New Live Oak Cemetery was at peak for spring flowers last week, just perfect for a peaceful, scenic walk.

Spring on Dallas Avenue

Homes on Dallas Avenue are ablaze with the color of azaleas this weekend.

These are in the yard of the George Baker House where it is said that a Union soldier crawled under its staircase and died following the Battle of Selma in April 1865.

The Soft Season of Selma

Spring is Selma's "soft season" as flowers open, and boughs of whites, pinks and lavendars take a bow.

Welcome to Spring in Selma!

I just can't get enough of Spring in Selma, especially its historic districts. The  Spanish Moss interwines with Bradford Pear first and dogwood later.

House & Gardens

I have long admired the spring gardens at this house in Old Town. The azaleas are just breathtaking, and I make a point to drive by and see them at their peak.

This time, I noticed that the place is for sale. This circa 1875 home seems to combine quality construction of the past such as interior woodwork and leaded glass windows with modern conveniences such as an elevator.

Azaleas are at peak this week in Selma, but another storm system is coming through Sunday, so get out and tour the town before the blossoms are gone!

Selma's Azalea Trail

Mobile is known for its Azalea Trail through the residential districts, but some of Selma's streets have trails of their own, and certainly this yard on Church Street qualifies!

I love the mix of light and dark pinks with white. These giant azalea shrubs form a trail around the formal rose garden.

Dogwood and Spanish Moss

Spring in Selma means dogwood blossoms
that appear to be growing from drapes of Spanish Moss!
