Country Church Pews

These pews take me back to the days when rural families worshiped

 close to home instead of traveling to town. Vehicles and paved

 farm-to-market roads slowly changed the Sunday culture. 

I wonder how many families repeated The Lord's Prayer

 and sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus"

 from these painted wooden pews.

February Theme Day, Umbrellas

"Umbrellas" is the theme for February over at City Daily Photo Blogs, 

and while I could have snapped open umbrellas in torrential rain

 this past week, I chose an umbrella that shields the sun.

The bright yellow umbrella is from Selma's Plantation Patterns

 and is located in Phoenix Park on Water Avenue. The photo was taken

 in 2011 during the park's grand opening.

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday

The United States gets a holiday Monday for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.

The civil rights leader, who was assassinated in Memphis in 1968, was invited to Selma

 in the 1960s to aid the voting rights movement for black Americans.

 He eventually led the Selma-to-Montgomery Voting Rights March in 1965 

that was protected by the National Guard.

A federal holiday honoring his birthday on the third Monday in January

 was signed into law in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan.

Lunch at The Sand Bar

The Sand Bar is open, folks, and the view is as great as the food!

We tried the catfish basket and burger by the river

 and were "happy, happy, happy" that we did! 

Prices are very reasonable, and the view of the City Marina is beautiful.

 Plus, the day of our lunch, the Harriett II, a 19th Century riverboat

 docked at Montgomery, paddle-wheeled by. But wouldn't you know it,

 I had just put up my camera and could not get to it before the boat was downriver.

Park Paths

New paths are available for walking and biking in Riverfront Park.

 Now, if the heat will just let everybody get outdoors!

Side Shadows

Branches from the tall shade trees at the Ben Ellis Dunaway House

 in Orrville dance across the side of this antebellum structure

 that once was a boys' academy. 

The home is one of several that will be on tour

 at this year's Historic Selma Pilgrimage March 16-17.

Five O'Clock Shadow

Looking east in late afternoon, the Edmund Pettus Bridge turns orange

in the sinking sunlight, forming deep shadows upon the Alabama River.

Shadow Shot Sunday, Shadow Play at the County Courthouse

Ever noticed the columns on the Dallas County Courthouse? They are part of the preserved section of the earlier structure. They're especially noticeable on sunny mornings when shadows like to play there.
