Up with Old Glory

Selma firefighters hoist Old Glory up the flagpole
at the Selma municipal complex. God bless the USA, a nation
that has endured many challenges and survived
so far because of its foundation on the rule of law,
not the whims of men; and
on rights given by God, not government.

Cold Day in Lafayette Park

BRRRRR! Monday brought out gloves, hats and scarves, and Old Glory waved all day! I think you can see how cold it is as evidenced by this view from Lafayette Park. The Arctic blast will linger through the weekend, and we could have highs that stay below freezing for a few days later this week. Weather forecasters encourage everyone to wrap pipes, bring pets inside or at least provide outdoor shelter and check on the elderly.

Flying the Flag

As the anniversary of 9-11-2001 approaches tomorrow, emails are circulating urging Americans to fly the flag. I believe this house flies it all the time, but it would be awesome if many homes and businesses put up Old Glory to remember the thousands who died and to support our country.

Unfurling Old Glory

Union troops in Sunday's Battle of Selma Reenactment unfurl Old Glory prior to engagement. While the rifle shots, cannon blasts and burning of the businesses bring "shock and awe," I enjoy visiting the camps beforehand to get a sense of the anticipation. The reenactment debuted in 1987, and in a few more years, Selma will recognize the 150th anniversary of one of the last battles of the American Civil War.
