Where Have All the Children Gone?

Where have all the children gone?

The playground at Bloch Park is empty this week, and it seems that the city, county and private schools are back in session, just when the temperatures begin to drop to the lower 90s.

Buying Local

Randy Chandler has been selling
his Chilton County peaches in Selma for 10 years. In addition to buying a basket of delectable peaches, you can place orders for his wife'’s wonderful peach preserves by asking ahead. Peaches, beans, tomatoes (green and red) peppers (all varieties)
melons, cucumbers and more are available fresh from the garden at the open air Farmers' Market at Bloch Park on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.

(Note: Chilton County peaches are world famous! If you are traveling I-65 through Alabama and notice a peach water tower, then you know you're in Chilton County.) Selmians are lucky to have huge, sweet peaches just a neighboring county away!

Valley Creek Up & Over

Valley Creek spilled up and over its banks this weekend after a three-day marathon of rainfall.

The yellow tape between the posts will hopefully keep people from trying to drive through the water that crept into Bloch Park, waterlogging part of the playground (not shown).

The Day After

Several Selma churches jointly reenact the events of Easter weekend. On Thursday evening, they recreate The Last Supper, and on Good Friday, they hold the trial of Jesus, followed by Jesus carrying the cross to Valley Creek Park (commonly known as Bloch Park). There, the Messiah is "crucified" and his "body placed" in the tomb of Joseph of Arimethea. Joseph, a rich man, had gone to the Roman leader Pontius Pilate and requested the body.

"When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed." Matthew 27: 59-60

The next day, the priests and Pharisees convinced Pilate to place a guard at the tomb, and they sealed the stone. They remembered that Jesus said He would rise on the third day and were afraid the disciples might steal the body and claim their Messiah had risen from the dead.
(I'm not sure how anyone could claim that the Messiah had resurrected without his physical appearance, however!)

No Excuses!

There is simply no excuse for Selmians not to be physically fit! You don't have to join a health club to walk the track at Bloch Park or to use the exercise stations. It's all free, courtesy the City of Selma and Vaughan Community Health. There is even a station for wheelchair users who can try an upper body workout.
