Dallas Academy Staircase

What modern school building has a staircase like this? None, I bet.

The beautiful banisters at the old Dallas Academy, once a Selma school, still look like new. The building is now owned by the City of Selma and used by various agencies such as the Boy Scouts of America and the Ceramics Arts program. Upstairs is where some of the workshops were held for the City of Selma Art Camp. The camp resumes for another week in mid-July.

  1. I love that wood work. Looks like duel staircases.

  2. It's a beautiful staircase. Boy Scouts. Hmmm. I hope none of them decide to slide down the banisters. ;-)

  3. Somehow the work of craftsmen lives after them. Unfortunately, we have few craftsmen left and greed rules so we build buildings that are junk and tear them down in 20 years.

That's exactly what happened to the first middle school in which I taught...after 20 years it was so rotted away, they tore it down and built a new concrete monstrosity which was a disaster from day one and I'm sure will be torn down 20 years after the occupancy date!

All of that to say I love these banisters! Not barristers!

  4. EG, I think the Boy Scout office is just for administration, not scout meetings!

Hi Jacob, I see what you mean. There's an effort here now to build a new high school when the current one has many wonderful architectural details. It's just needed a lot of TLC through the years.

  5. Beautiful staircase. Glad I don't have to walk up and down them.

  6. I walked up and down these stairs several times a day for several years (one year was spent in the 'Little Red School House' in the third grade).

I lived three blocks away on Selma Ave. and was in Miss Evelyn Lassiter's first grade in 1935. I believe her classroom was not upstairs, nor Mrs. Moore's second grade - but were down on the second floor.

I just found your web site and am delighted at your great photograpy that brings back so many pleasant memories.
