Acrylics Pavilion

A popular activity at Valley Grande's first Art in the Park was an acrylics painting workshop under the pavilion.

The novice painters were instructed by Mary Katherine Moore, a former Valley Grande resident.

Valley Grande's Historic Marker

The area known as Valley Grande has been settled since 1821, but it's only been since 2003 that the town has been incorporated. This historic marker was placed at the city park in May.

Lighting the Sky

Here's another photo of fireworks lighting the sky in Valley Grande on the Fourth of July. (Click the picture to see a larger view.)

The holiday celebrates the colonies' declaration of independence from Great Britain in 1776 and states America's case for the right to be a free nation. You can read all about it HERE.

Valley Grande Political Forum

Selma's not the only town headed toward municipal elections. Nearby Valley Grande also elects its mayor and council August 26. The Valley Grande Exchange Club sponsored a political forum at Martin Middle School, and here, incumbent Mayor Tom Lee responds to questions. The other mayoral candidate, Terry Hughes, listens at right, and moderator Benjamin Austin, stands at the back. Seated at left are city council candidates. All were given two minutes for introductory speeches, then responded to questions from the audience.

Valley Grande City Limits

The city of Valley Grande is Selma's nearest neighbor. Incorporated in 2003, the rural community includes a large section of north Dallas County. Some areas of Valley Grande join the Selma city limits but not this one on Alabama Highway 219. It is home to several businesses, an elementary and middle school, several new subdivisions and the historic community of Summerfield.

Currently, Valley Grande does not have a main downtown section, but its future plan can be found here.

Stars and Stripes

The new walking trail in Valley Grande is lined with flags for Memorial Day.
The winding path through tall pines was dedicated last week, and sponsors placed the Stars and Stripes there to honor soldiers who have died for their country.
Valley Grande is located just north of the Selma city limits.
