The one-room schoolhouse at Old Cahawba still stands.
Used until the 1950s, it was one of less than 100 segregated
African-American schools in Alabama. The school is located near
the ruins of the Methodist-Episcopal Church that burned in 1954.

what a history this little school house has had...i was surprised to learn that one of the 2 middle schools in our county was once the all black school. a friend of mine was telling me about when her grandparents went to it...of course it has been re-done but i'm always amazed to hear about our local history!
...what a relic from the past. I love the rusty roof and the weathered siding. Thanks for stopping by, please come again.
Has no one made any effort to preserve the structure or is it too a painful a chapter in history?
I do love seeing the old schools----this one looks like it may not last too much longer. A shame

One wonders how long it might still last.
What a treasure...I would love to step back in time and see/hear the kids.
Such a fantastic piece of history.
