Byrd's Famous Tree

Byrd School's live oak tree spreads shade in all directions in summer, but during the school year, it's known as The Learning Tree. A nearby plaque notes that the tree once shaded the home of Judge William Byrd, who "championed children's rights to a good education." The school, which serves elementary students, was established in 1916 and is located in Selma's Old Town Historic District.

I attended Byrd School and actually lived across the street. My mother also attended Byrd School so it really is an old school but certainly not as old as that beautiful oak tree. I never knew it was called The Learning Tree. What a beautiful picture of the tree and the front of the school.

That is a beautiful tree! I would love to sit under it and read, or have a swing in it...

HI there, PA Friend. Thanks for your comment! I think the grounds at Byrd School are gorgeous. There are many beautiful native plants, and I think alumni would be proud of their old school.
