A Gem in Summerfield (Theme Day - Wood)


Today is Theme Day in the City Daily Photo Blog community, and the theme is WOOD.

So here's an old, wooden building that once served as a schoolhouse around 1850 and has stood the test of time just up the road in Summerfield.

    My mother taught in a one-room school house in the Minnesota woods back in the 20s. The stories she could tell!

    I'm impressed that someone has kept this building up so nicely. There aren't many of these left.

    Do you know what it's used for now?

    Jacob, back in the 1980s, it was a community center. I don't know if it still is or not.

    It would be neat to sit in the building and try to imagine the activity that would have taken place in there so long ago.

    My mother, Frances King Caine, taught school in this building from the 1930s to the late 1950s. It was a one-teacher Dallas County school, with students in all six grammar school grades, and usually an enrollment of about 15 pupils.
    I, myself, attended all six grades there under her strict tutelage. My mother played ball with us at recess and directed many pageants and programs for us, all the while maintaining high academic standards. She taught there as long as the building was used as a school.
    It then became a community center, e.g., being used as a polling place, and by the Summerfield United Methodist Church at its annual homecoming events.
