Today's presidential election holds a lot of significance for Selmians since BOTH major party nominees campaigned here. I just happened to be around to personally snap (well, fight my way through the crowds) their photographs and present them especially for you in today's post.
While Alabama isn't a "Swing State," its history in the Voting Rights Movement attracts politicians.
Republican John McCain (top photo) brought his "Time for Action" tour to Selma last April, and Democrat Barack Obama (bottom photo) spoke at Brown Chapel AME Church during the 2007 Bridge Crossing Jubilee.
While polls have shown Obama leading, the only poll that really counts is the one today, so please go VOTE!
(On a more personal note, my dear husband has the distinction of turning ?? years old on Election Day, and he's still got my vote! Happy Birthday!)

That would be a lot of work to get that close to the candidates! When John & Sarah came to Minneapolis, there were well over 15,000 there and I couldn't even hear them from where I was.

Well, it will be a day of high anxiety in many homes; my polls open in 5 minutes, but I'm waiting 'til mid-morning to vote to give time and space to earlier voters who have to go to work. How great that you could get close enough for these wonderful campaign photos. Go OBAMA!!

I should add, however, that my last comment is not an endorsement of Barack Obama. I am merely encouraging voters to get out and support their candidate, because that is the democratic process. Hopefully, no voter will fail to vote because he thinks his candidate might lose or because he is overconfident that his candidate will win. I don't much like pre-election polls for those reasons.

We early voted over two weeks ago. I'm praying that the polls are right.

Yes, Tanya, I was right there on both occasions. I was determined not to miss these history-making events in our town. However, I wasn't quite as close as it appears since these photos are enlarged. I just politely weave my way through crowds, and being small helps. Sometimes I get lucky!
wow, very cool! in california we're forgotten when it comes to campaigning. Maybe we need a bit more competition to make the parties care enough to visit.
Lucky you! We had very brief and expensive fundraising or exclusive visits by presidential candidates to San Diego. Hope you have a celebratory evening with your husband!
Your right. The media, the voters, and us watchers from around the world can speculate all they like but the only poll that counts will soon be over and, only then, will we know the real result.
