September Theme Day (Sister Cities)

Click photo for a larger image.
Welcome to Selma...North Carolina, a sister city to Selma, Alabama!

While Selma, Alabama also has a sister city in South America, I chose to post a picture of the town that was named for our town. Back in the Reconstruction Era, when founders proposed naming it Sharpsburg after Confederate Col. John Sharp who had settled there, Sharp objected. He preferred honoring his old hometown of Selma, Alabama, and proposed naming the town for the place he was born. (For more details about Selma, N.C., history, click HERE.)

Today, there are quite a few similarities between the two Selmas. Both were thriving railroad towns. Both have old railroad depots and red cabooses, and there are old grist mills nearby.

Thanks to Lewis Mullen, photographer and author of the Selma Daily Photo in North Carolina for permission to use his photo.

There are lots of other sister cities getting celebrated today.

Good Morning Selma, Alabama. Thanks for letting us share your name. Moon - Selma, North Carolina

I'm learning so many things along my "trip" today!

The Selma sisters! I wondered who Selma was twinned with and now I find you've taken the initiative and added one all on your own. It's really sweet, I like it.

Great photo borrowing. I wonder if people get confused between the two Selma's?! Lol :)

A little additional info:
Selma, Alabama was named after the royal fortress described in William Mcpherson's "Songs of Ossian." It means "high throne." Selma, Ala. is situated on a high bluff above the Alabama River.
Thanks for all of your interesting comments.

Moon, your town is welcome to share my town's name. Had it not been for the CDPB, I never would have learned of the connection between our two Selmas.

It looks like home to me. I mean this district downtown in your city looks like almost any small town around here where I grew up. The only difference is that around here the soda fountains and drug stores are closed. I suppose they are open down there, but maybe not. We have been invaded by the big box stores.

I do like your photography and this is a nice one.

Thanks for visiting my blog.

WEll actually I looked up that "official" sister city site and low and behold B'ham, England is nowhere to be found. Oh well, I made it official today on my blog anyway! Like the "other Selma" too!

A perfect choice for the theme day. Selma, NC looks just as quaint and cute as Selma, AL. :)

Ah a sister city with the same name - well that makes sense. I couldn't

It's so interesting the read the history and the similarities between the two Selmas.

So Selma like Cheltenham is linked to its namesake - fascinating.

Note: While Selma, N.C., is not an "official" sister city to Selma, Ala., the connections are so interesting that I thought they should be acknowledged here.
Beloit, a community in Dallas County, also has an official sister city in Beloit, Wisconsin.

I'm sorry that I didn't get to your blog yesterday, but since Labor Day is the last day of the MN State Fair, we took our granddaughter there instead of enjoying all the Sister Cities' photos. Having one with the same name as your own city is unusual!
