Muddy River

It's been a long, long time since the Alabama River at Selma has been this muddy or this high, and I wonder where these boaters are heading in the swift current. Tropical Storm Fay brought more than seven inches of rain to our area, replenishing our waterways, at least temporarily. The meteorologists said that only a tropical system could bring enough rain to even begin to quench last year's devastating drought. Now, we hear that Tropical Storm Gustav is expected to become a major hurricane and hit somewhere along the Gulf Coast in the next several days!

This looks like one of our bridges over the Mississippi. Those curves and arches are so graceful, aren't they?

What a lovely shot. Beautiful.

The boaters certainly give an idea of the scale of the bridge and river.
Here's hoping Gustav runs out of steam before hitting the coast..

Cat fishing is good where creeks intersect the river when the water is high. They may be looking to cash in. Pappy

What a fantastic picture. I didn't realise how big the bridge was till I saw the tiny boat and tiny people!

Everyone here is bracing for a big storm. I don't think we'll see much in Jackson though. Maybe I'm just being naive though.

I like this bridge. I hope those boaters don't get swept away!

Even with a muddy river your photo is beautiful!!!
Hope Gustav will not affect you as it did on some caribbean islands...
Thanks for visiting my blog!

P:S: Love the humming-bird shot too! :-)

Very effective photo, yes.
Tropical storms, hurricanes, 7" of rain, high rivers--it all sounds so exotic to us in the dry Middle East!

Halcyon, better watch those hurricanes! I'm sure people in Jackson are remembering all the damage from Katrina! Inland cities like Jackson often receive at least tropical storm force winds if they are hurricance strength on the coast, and with all those trees, downed limbs and widespread power outages are possible. Good luck with Gustav!

We're under a hurricane watch here -- again. We left the window protection up from Fay and just have a few things to put away in the yard. It's that time of year.
