In the Thick of Thistle

To some of us, thistles are just prickly, aggravating weeds meant to be dug up and thrown away.

To bumblebees, they are sustenance.

To the Scots, they are the national emblem and a symbol of high honor!
It seems that thistles once drove the barefoot Norsemen away from their invasion of Scottish shores.

Whatever, the flower of the thistle is really pretty up close!

  1. This is a beautiful combination of thistle and bumblebee.

The thistles we have up here are called Canada Thistle and the flower is a light lavender or blue color but they are still the envy of every bumblebee and butterfly in the countryside.

I like your photograph of this.

  3. Thank you, Abe and Marley.
I bet the lavender and blue thistles are beautiful as well.
Marley, I appreciate the honor! I was amazed with this one since I don't have a macro lens, just a telephoto. The bumblebee cooperated and allowed me to practically put the lens on top of him. He was too busy to pay me any attention!

  7. Very nice photo.

And yes, thistles once helped scots in a battle against normand inavders whom tried to surprise scotish troops on a night attack and went into a field full of them ... their screams of pain woke the scots ... the rest I guess it's easy to guess!
