The James M. Calhoun Law Office in Heritage Village is a replica of U.S. Senator and Secretary of State John C. Calhoun's law office.James was John's nephew, and John was a powerful politician from South Carolina and one of "The Great Triumvirate" in the 1830s and 1840s. James became a lawyer and planter in Dallas County, Alabama, and served in the state House of Representatives and Senate.
This one-room, Greek Revival structure was built in the 1830s and moved here from the little town of Carlowville.
What a precious building, precious in the sense of the word that it is fine.

ReplyDeleteFrom what I recall, it was moved in assorted pieces. The office stood for 100+ years on the property of Andrew Pickens Calhoun in Carlowville, and was only moved in recent years. Needless to say, it wasn't in the best of repair then - it had been used as an storage shed for years. I'm the GG-Grandson of the original owner, James Calhoun, and our ties go waaaaay back in the old South.
