The new walking trail in Valley Grande is lined with flags for Memorial Day.The winding path through tall pines was dedicated last week, and sponsors placed the Stars and Stripes there to honor soldiers who have died for their country.
Valley Grande is located just north of the Selma city limits.

ReplyDeleteOur city has a real estate company who puts a single flag in front of each house in the city. They are there on Memorial Day morning. And very nice to see.

ReplyDeleteThe flags are for Memorial Day, which honors the memory of American soldiers who have died in battles going back to the Revolutionary War.
Memorial Day became official in 1868, shortly after the War Between the States. It once was known as Decoration Day, when people decorated the graves of those who died. In recent years, ever since it was established on the last Monday of May, it has become a three-day weekend and a time for family celebrations, vacations and barbecue.
However, many cities still have memorial ceremonies and cemetery decorations. Selma has a service today at Memorial Stadium, sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). An Honor Guard will post the colors, and there will be a speech.
There are several war memorials at the stadium, including one with a gas flame.
Those flags look so new...I guess my weathered one should be retired ;-)
