New View from Bienville Park

Not very long ago, this view of the bridge was obscured by trees,
vines and brush. But "thanks" to a sewer collapse that caused
the bank to sink, repairs were made, and Bienville Park has a new fence
and a new view of the Alabama River and Pettus Bridge.

Note the winter sky with wisps of white.
It looks cold, but we enjoyed a spring-like day
with the temp near 70 degrees F.

Signs, Signs, Lighting the Way

A gas street lamp stands at the Water Avenue entrance to Riverfront Park,
thanks to Alagasco. Referring to the Civil Rights Movement,
"Lighting the Way" honors the City of Selma "and the men and women
who marched into history in 1965 to bridge the divide
from the past to a better future."

C is for Collards and Cabbage

C is for COLLARDS and CABBAGE, and it's time to plant them
if you COVER them when it frosts. I spotted these early arrivals
at Holley's Farm and Garden Center in downtown Selma.

B is for Barber Chair

The letter of the week is "B," and this 1950's era BARBER chair sits waiting
for its next customer over at Junebugg's Flea and Antique Market.
It can be yours for $1,500.

The Cast Comes to Town

for a day honoring the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Guest photographer Christine Weerts captured much of the evening
including a march to the bridge (above) for a concert featuring John Legend
and Common. Shown below are "Selma" Director Ava DuVernay
and actor David Oyelowo, who portrayed King.

Oyelowo prayed on the bridge, and a Red Carpet screening of the movie
 followed at Selma's Walton Theatre.

Skywatch Friday, Steeples

The sun is finally shining down on us today, but this photograph
of the First Baptist Church (Lauderdale Street) steeples was taken
a couple of years ago and shows our usual wispy, winter sky.
(Notice the gargoyles on the center tower.)

Signs, Signs, Buy Local

If you have never had a cup of freshly ground Revival Coffee
or a drizzle of Southern Ambrosia Honey on a buttered biscuit..
or planned a truly southern dinner from the Land of Cotton Cookbook...
or tried the natural skin-care products from Simply Making It...
well then, you have missed some of Selma's own.

But they can all be purchased at Mark's Mark,
a popular local market on the west side of town.
It's a touch of gourmet in a country store!

A is for American Wings and Seafood

We start over with the letter A this week at the ABC Wednesday blog meme,
and I've been saving this lunch for it!

The grilled shrimp, fries, coleslaw and toast are just one of many tasty meals
to try at American Wings and Seafood. The local (no fast food here!) restaurant
recently relocated from a tiny building on Citizens Parkway to a larger one
on U.S. Highway 80 West at the edge of town.

The menu features of variety of fish and seafood with sides
plus wings and other American fare.

A Day in Gray

Gray is the color of the day and week in Selma!

Here is the cloudy, slightly foggy view from the Alabama River Terrace
 behind the St. James Hotel.

Monday Murals, The WPA-Era Mural

This WPA-era mural stands along two walls of the
Black Heritage Wing at the Old Depot Museum.

What is so significant about this depiction
in the life of the black community?

Bluebird of Winter

So on the coldest day of winter, what should be perched upon the birdbath?

A bluebird!

Actually, there were two, and today was the second time
I have spotted them in our backyard.
And we don't even have a bluebird house.

(Please excuse the fuzzy picture! The telephoto lens was not attached,
and this photo is severely cropped!)

Quesadilla at the Mexican Grill

So, after taking a month's vacation from the blog, I'm returning with FOOD
by introducing the Valle Grande Mexican Grill's
spicily delicious chicken quesadilla!

If I was anywhere near there right now, this would be my order
on the coldest day of the new year!
Filled with grilled chicken, peppers, onions, sauce, cheese and sour cream,
the dish is really way more than I can eat...leftovers for lunch the next day!
