Summer Oasis

The municipal park between City Hall and the library is a cool place
to be in summer. This is the first year that I've noticed these
shade-loving begonias planted around the trees.

Now go ahead, take a seat over there on the bench near the Brooke Cannon.
But wait, why isn't the fountain on?
I'll have to check on that!

The Spring House

The Spring House has to be one of the prettiest storage buildings ever,
but the structure in Old Live Oak Cemetery was once used for concerts,
especially around Memorial Day. Also known as The Pigeon House,
I'm told that the gables (now closed off) housed pigeons.

The Valley Creek Bridge Project

It's a no go for pedestrians and traffic at the Valley Creek Bridge
on West Dallas Avenue. They have been fenced and blocked out!

Crews are tearing out the old bridge to replace it with a new one,
and traffic along the busy thoroughfare to downtown has been rerouted
for most of the next year.

Follow this blog for the progress and a picture of the new bridge next summer!

Road to the Marina

The road to the city marina is especially busy this time of year.

Drive all the way to the end of the road, and have lunch or supper at The Sand Bar.
Stop at the Farmer's Market on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday and buy fresh fruits
and vegetables that are locally grown. On your left, try the walking trail,
and over to your right are Bloch Park, a baseball stadium; and Memorial Stadium
for football and track. A children's playground and picnic area
are near the farmer's market.

Banister

B is for the BANISTER at Dallas Academy. How many hands must
have held on to this warm wooden rail!

Window Shopping at Teja's

If you like boutiques, Broad Street has several all in the same block,
andTeja's is one of the newest. I love her eye for merchandise
AND great prices! The personalized pocket tees really caught MY eye!

Can you tell my birthday is coming! :-)

Morning Water

Keeping container plants watered is an everyday, sometimes twice-a-day task
in Selma in the summer. But, it's a delight to see greenery and colorful flowers
outside our retail stores, and look what I spotted, a yellow watering can
 for Monday Mellow Yellows!

Curbside at Carter Drug

When there is no space for drive-up service downtown,
curbside service is a great alternative!

Anticipation

So what is behind Door No. 13???

Children at a recent Selma Art Camp anticipate their next art project,
making a 3-D sculpture from odds and ends
with renowned folk artist Charlie Lucas.

White Crepe Myrtle

Crepe myrtle has bloomed since June this year, and with all the rain,
the blossoms keep on keeping on!

Stormy Sky at Sunset

Last evening's sunset was a mix of orange and pink, purple and gray.
Just as the sun went down, the sky clouded once again and brought
even more rain. While we are thankful for rain (in a way),
there is hay to cut and a flower garden that has turned to weeds and grass!

High Water at the Marina

So, July has been one of the rainiest and coolest that I can remember,
and here we are at the City Marina where the sun is out, the river is up,
and a few fishermen try their luck on the far left bank. We enjoyed
the midday view from the porch of The Sandbar restaurant.

The Light of the Bridge

The sky was a soft blue on a spring day when I photographed
this light in Heritage Village.

This is the original light that stood at the Edmund Pettus Bridge from 1940
until the 1960s. (See yesterday's post for Signs, Signs.) The light was saved
by the Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society.

Where Oh Where?

Anybody know where this sign is located in Selma?

The plaque is attached to the pole of the original light used
on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The light was used from 1940
to circa 1960 and restored by the
 Selma-Dallas County Historic Preservation Society.

Z is for ZigZag

Midday is clearly not the best time for good light when taking pictures unless
you are aiming for deep shadows, a cat crossing the sidewalk AND a ZIGZAG
 pattern in the brick.

It's Z Week at ABC Wednesday!

Let's Play Dressup

"Rain, rain go away, 'cause the children want to play!"

Meanwhile, they will have to stay indoors and play Dressup!

Do you prefer the flower-and-lace sunhat, western hat,
curly wig or black lace hat and shawl?

These hats were on hand for the Selma Art Camp kids in June.
They dressed up and had their picture taken. The second art camp
at the old Dallas Academy is this week.

Y is for Young

It's ABC Wednesday, and the letter is Y.

Y is for YOUNG, and here is the YOUNGEST member of our family,
two-and-a-half week old John Douglas. He's our first grandchild,
and rather than blogging this past week,
I've been getting ready for his first visit to Selma!
Now, we are just rockin' the days and nights away!
